What to say – got detention and then in school suspension stemming from panic attack?

August 12th, 2008

panic attack
Helpmydogplease asked:

Had panic attack in class. Couldn’t leave, laid head down while sweating and crying on my binder. Got (my 1st ever) detention for sleeping in class. Told friend about what happened literally just after arriving to detention, got kicked out pretty much immediately. Now, I’ve been written up for disrupting the environment and having habitual behavior problems. I’m going to the office in the morning I guess since it was after school? ***?

    Overkill, huh?

Have your parents write something up, stating that the original offense was due to a medical issue, and that your pediatrician/family physician will be brought into the matter. You may wish to bring at least one of them to the meeting in the morning, in case the administration decides to get down on you for this.

If they really decide to push this, have your parents make it clear that they’d also be happy to bring the family attorney into the matter, if the physician’s word won’t do. From what you’ve said, you don’t have a previous record, so it’s unclear where the charge of habitual behavior problems comes in.

There’s really nothing you can do about this, since you’re a minor. Your parents, however, can make the administration’s life a living hell if they don’t get off your back. I know I’d have no problem doing it if my child was being punished for something he had no control over. Seriously, be up front with your parents, let them know the whole story, and get them as involved as possible. There’s no way the school will want the bad press and trouble that your parents could make.

(I normally don’t recommend this, as teachers and administrators have a lot of overprotective my baby couldn’t possibly have done _________ to deal with. However, if you really are being punished for a medical condition, especially one that’s as hard to control as panic attacks, you are completely within your rights to have your parents come down as hard as they have to. That’s their job, to be your advocate.)

Turns out panic attacks are caused by certain deficiencies in the body such as low Epinephrine, high Cortisol, Doapamine, Serotonin. Tell your doctor to order this test for you. It is the only real way to find out what’s actually wrong so that they can fix it. I swear I think doctors must be taking kick backs from the drug companies so they just keep us medicated instead of trying to fix the real problem and help us.
    Test info:
Neuro Adrenal 1 Profile test from Neuro Science, Inc. 373 280th street, Osceola, WI 54020 Phone: 1-888-342-7272
The test consists of 3 small tubes for saliva collection and opne small vial for urine. You take the test from home and then mail back to the lab with the pre-paid postage. They send the results to your doctor, who then should give you a copy. Good luck!! And help spread the word.
