What to do if you are having a panic attack?
August 26th, 2008
JadedEzzence asked:
I am having a slight panic attack as we speak… It feels as though my heart is beating faster, I’m a bit fidgety. I tried to go to sleep, but I can’t and lying down makes me feel worse. I am trying to stop it before it escalates. Are there any quick suggestions that I can do right now? Are there any medicines I should have on standby if this happens in the future, as from time to time I am prone to these attacks.

try to stop it before it becomes full blown–a panic attack although seems like it lasts forever it typically lasts 10 minutes or less. When you start feeling the beginning of the anxiety–try closing your eyes and picturing some place that is relaxing and fun for you–hard to do sometimes–try taking deep breaths–slowly in through your nose and slowly out through your mouth–Klonopin is great for panic attacks–some of the newer antidepressants also work well with anxiety and depression without making you sleepy–call your doctor.

.Ya go outside and get some fresh air and walk to the store and get a can of 7UP and a bag of cheese popcorn and help a elderly person across the street. works for me.

Try pursed lip breathing
Folks with COPD use this method.
There are also anti anxiety meds like ativan ( helped me quit smoking)

I am a licensed Paramedic. We get calls for panic attacksallthe time. If you have seen a doctor and had it confirmed that you do have an anxiety disorder then follow your physicians suggestions. The Rx Xanax is sometimes is used. If you have never been diagnosed as having a panic attack, I would suggest you call 911 and have EMS evaluate you while you are having the symptoms. Sometimes, it can be a cardiac event such as paraoxsysmal tachycardia or other another dysrhythmia. The medics can do an EKG to help rule this out. If you feel short of breath and very anxious AND have numbness and tingling around your mouth and fingertips or your fingers are having trouble moving (Hyperventlation Syndrome) you can try breathing into a paper sack to help from blowing off all your carbon dioxide. But, the best answer is to call 911 during your symptoms to maybe find the cause.

I’m seeing this 45 minutes after the fact, but here’s my answer.
Make an appointment with a licensed Psychologist or Psychiatrist, TODAY.
There’s no need for anyone to go through repeated panic attacks
with all the help available.
I know the terror, the embarassment, and the fear of another attack can be disabling and make you afraid to leave your house, go to work,to the store, bank, in general that fear can control and terrify you even when your’re not having an attack.
You have a real medical problem, that is very common, and I hope you’ll get the help you need SOON. You’re not crazy, unless you ignore the warning signals your body is crearly giving
you , O.K?
Now, PLEASE go make that call. Get an appointment this week
Take Care
