panic attacks
I am a nurse and it is embarrasing when I have panic attacks on the job. I am supposed to be taking care of sick people not the other way around. Any suggestions?

When you feel an attack coming on breathe in a steady and regular rhythm and focus on your job at hand…or anything EXCEPT what is causing the attack.

I could talk for hours. Having experienced panic attacks myself for ten years now off and on this is not a hit and miss operation.

Keep a Diary (write down when you feel panicky)

Keep a journal of everything you consume (it may be something you’re eating or drinking

Try decaf coffee for a while if you drink coffee and decaf soda if you drink soda

Invest in a relaxation CD and force yourself to to do it even if it’s for ten minutes a day

Talk to a Doctor if you’ve been experiencing them regularly and they are affecting your everyday life.

E-mail me if you need to chat.

    Good Luck!

I am a paramedic. At least you know what you are dealing with. If your co workers no also that will help. Just stop go into another room. Your break room and breath relax. Your co workers should understand and also know how to treat it. Is there something that sets them off or is it random. Also you know as well as I do that there is meds out there for this problem. Get it under control. Don’t be embarrased, its part of life. Just do the best you can and move on. Good Luck.

God forbid, dont break out a brown bag, and begin breathing in it in Public!!! That will only make your Anxiety worse!!! Especially when people are all concerned!!! Go see a physician, I didn’t for years, and the Anxiety only got worse as I got older!! I never wanted to get on medicine for it, because I was against mind altering things!! But, I basically had no choice, I was losing sleep, and it was interfering with my work, and making me really grouchy at home!! So, now I’m on Diazepam, and its generic for Valume, but it works tremendously!!! Before you see the doctor, when you get these in public again, go away from the crowds, and sit down somewhere where its nice quiet, and just block everything out of your head, and breath, nice deep breath’s!!! And continue to block these things that ail you and continue to slowly do your deep breathing’s so your brain can begin to receive oxygen again!!! My sympathy’s to you, hun!! I’ve been getting Anxiety Attack’s since I was in my early 20s, and didn’t see a doctor until 13-15 years later, and had paramedics at my house so many times during those days I cant count!!! And if it wasn’t paramedics it was trips to the E.R.!!! And I always turned down there medicine, until I got fed-up, with it all, you know!!! So, you may very well have to get fed-up enough to go see a doctor as well !!! You take care, for me, and breathe!!!! Deep Breath’s even when your not getting them, its good practise!!! Smile!!!

go to the nearest bathroom and dont let any body notice you.
take breath and take two or three minutes untill you feel better. then wash your hand with hot water and take time with washing your hand.
