Doctors seem to think I had a panic attack but dull pains in chest, back and neck persist. Still anxiety?

May 8th, 2009

panic attack
For over 2 weeks I have had dull chest, back, neck pain on left side, dizziness and shortness of breath. One day last week was worse than the rest after running to the subway I had a couple episodes of great pain in chest and loss of breath. After numerous tests, doctors think it was a panic attack. Since the symptoms mildly persist, could it still be a panic attack or anxiety? It seems to me like it would have gone away after the panic attack but they haven’t completely. Any thoughts?

you don’t mention age or any of the things they might have done to test you like a stress test or ekg. you also don’t mention any prescriptions they might have given you. panic sometimes can stay with you for extended periods. just because you have an acute episode doesn’t mean it can’t also be chronic and long term. the concerning part should be the shortness of breath on exertion. sometimes heart damage or trouble takes time to develop and you might need a follow up or a stress test (treadmill test). if your symptoms are controlled by drigs like ativan or zoloft or efexxor, chances are it is panic. if not, it could very well be a heart condition.

Seems that you could still be mildly panicking or stressing yourself out on an ongoing basis. Not that I am an expert on that type of thing.

One thing that might help is learning to be fearless. Not that your should start jumping off subways, just learn that you can handle anything in life. If you are stressing out, that should help.

Also, learn to have a positive attitude toward everyone. That helps solve all kinds of problems.

Maybe panic attack sounds like overkill. Nervous tension might fit better. I’ve had that for years, just like you describe, and also in random places all over my body. When they first started, they seemed like a heart attack, but my doctor figured it out right away and put me on muscle relaxants. He said the muscles in my chest were clamping down on the arteries to my heart and causing heart attack symptoms.

Now I just recognize the symptoms and know to take deep breaths and put my feet up. Although, I did have an episode last year that put me in the emergency room. Actually the symptoms started to subside the minute I dialed 911.
